Grant (2008) – Key Success Factors…

Grant offers this model as a means to complement the 5 forces model. It makes up for porters model not surfacing the detail of what factors contribute to success.

Two aspects – what customers want and how do we survive the competition. And based on these the key success factors should pop out.

Still requires a bit of lateral thinking and reasoning. For example if customers value low cost – you may look to purchase larger factories or production machinery lines in order to take advantage of economies of scale.

Bit of a similarity between finding a competitive advantage and the key success factors that pop out at the end. Eg. If surviving competition means capitalising on economies of scale then doesn’t that mean economies of scale are a key success factor?

Interesting thoughts about this model and the public sector. Public sector KSF’s seem to focus on those aspects that make a project successful – clear roles and responsibilities, unifying vision, commitment…. So is stakeholder opinion – rather than just consumer opinion – important when trying to suss out what success means?
